DETROIT - The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a man who reportedly fell while performing some type of maintenance work on the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ont.

Coast Guard Sector Detroit Chief Gabriel Settel says a bridge operator reported that the man fell about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday from the bridge's centre span.

Within minutes a Coast Guard rescue boat began conducting a search. A dive team has been called in to assist.

Settel says painting and welding work was being done on the bridge at the time of the fall. The commuter bridge is owned by the Detroit International Bridge Co. and connects Detroit with Windsor.

Settel says he had no immediate information on whether safety equipment was being used.
