GECDSB appoints new trustee, Malek Mekawi

The Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) has appointed a new trustee, representing Windsor Wards 3, 4 and 10.

Malek Mekawi was appointed to the position and was sworn in on Tuesday. He is a graduate of Vincent Massey Secondary School with deep ties to Windsor-Essex and a passion for fostering meaningful change within public education.

GECDSB said Mekawi was a student trustee in the 2021 to 2022 school year, where he gained experience in governance and advocacy. He also co-chaired the GECDSB Student Senate and a leadership scholarship that looks to reduce financial barriers for those wanting to continue on into post-secondary education.

The 20-year-old is a student at the University of Windsor for electrical and computer studies. As trustee, he values inclusivity, collaboration and accountability and will make sure all decisions reflects the needs of the student population, while also aligning with the board’s strategic priorities.
