Waterloo Region District School Board has canceled all extra-curricular and co-curricular activities for the remainder of the year, starting next week.

The move was in response to yesterday’s Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) announcement that they were planning  withdraw from all volunteer activities by December 10, 2012.

This includes all WCSSSA athletic practices and games, as well as clubs.

In a release sent to the media, Executive Superintendent for Human Resource Services for the school board, Mark Schinkel says, “Cancelling these activities is a regrettable decision that is in response to anticipated union sanctions,”

“Administration is actively monitoring the labour situation and is prioritizing our decision-making around safety, security, and learning of our students.”

OSSTF has directed its teachers, that as of Monday, secondary school teachers will,  arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before class, leave immediately after classes finish, stop participating in extracurricular activities.

The OSSTF has been in a legal strike position with the WRDSB since the 12th of November.

The same does not apply to elementary school teachers who are separate from WRDSB.
