A race that observers believed could go any of three ways turned out to be a one-sided affair.

With 54 of 59 polls reporting, former BlackBerry employee Dave Jaworsky had 55 per cent of the vote – more than double that of defence lawyer Erika Traub, who was at 24.7 per cent.

In third was former weather broadcaster Dave MacDonald, with 17.6 per cent, followed by entrepreneur Rami Said, with 2.8 per cent.

“I’m thrilled. I can’t believe the trust that I’ve heard from the citizens of Waterloo,” Jaworsky said.

His top issue is the economy and jobs.

"An economic development strategy for 2015 is the top priority,” Jaworsky explained. He also added that he will spend time talking with outgoing mayor Brenda Halloran on what's been done in Waterloo, and what comes next.

There were few surprises on the council front, with Brian Bourke winning a close race over Janice Moore in Ward 2, the one seat with no incumbent in the running.
