Uber driver accused of sexually assaulting passenger
A Waterloo man is facing charges after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman while working as an Uber driver.
Waterloo Regional Police say the man gave the woman a ride to a townhouse complex near University Avenue and Marsland Drive around 4:30 a.m. last Thursday.
According to police, the woman was sexually assaulted by the man while she was in his vehicle. She was able to break free, and was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries.
Issa Affan, 39, was arrested Friday in connection with the case. He is facing charges including sexual assault causing bodily harm, forcible confinement and uttering threats.
Affan made a brief court appearance Monday, displaying little emotion and listening to the proceedings with the help of an Arabic interpreter. His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.
Calling the incident "deeply upsetting", an Uber spokesperson says the man's access to the Uber app has been removed and the company has provided information to police to assist their investigation.
