Two male youths were taken to hospital with injuries after a fight involving weapons in Downtown Kitchener on Thursday morning.

Police tweeted about the incident in the area of Eby Street and King Street East around 11:40 a.m.

A news release from police on Thursday afternoon said the incident involved weapons, including hammers and machetes.

The two youths were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Officials said around 150 young people had gathered in the area.

The conflict was caught on camera and circulated amongst students at the nearby Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute.

"I saw a group of people walking aggressively towards something," said Connor Dinh, who witnessed the fight. "Then, I saw someone pull a hatchet out of their pants.

Dinh, who is a Grade 12 student, said he was eating lunch at the Kitchener Market when it happened.

"Just panic and sort of commotion, just a lot of people surrounding each other," he said.

There's no word on whether or not the youths involved attend the school, but students said there was an announcement at Cameron Heights in the hours that followed.

"Pretty much just offering support for students, anybody who was scared about the events," said Janine Cameron.

Thursday's fight left some students feeling shaken up.

"This is very violent for every student and they shouldn't go through this," said Jamal Ahmadifk.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the fight or recorded dash camera footage is asked to contact police.
