A 20-year-old Cambridge man is facing a trespassing charge after an unusual rescue in Cambridge Tuesday evening.

The man and a teenage girl apparently entered a tunnel which runs under the downtown Galt area. They gained access to the tunnel where it empties into the Grand River near Cedar Street.

According to police, they walked along the tunnel for approximately 15 minutes when they came across rough water. The two were able to find a safe place to take refuge, and used a cell phone to call for help.

Police cruisers and fire trucks converged on the area and firefighters entered the tunnel, called out and were able to locate where the two were.

The area they were found was approximately under the intersection of Main Street and Wellington Street.

They were brought to safety by members of the Cambridge Fire Department where police met them and interviewed them.
