Heading into Monday's elections, everyone knew there would be new mayors in North Dumfries Township and Wellesley Township.

What may have come as a bit more of a surprise was that Woolwich Township ended up with a new mayor as well.

Incumbent Todd Cowan was sent packing by voters, finishing in fourth out of four candidates with 501 votes.

“I had a great four years. I had a vision and I implemented that vision, but the people have spoken – so I’m fine with that,” Cowan told CTV News.

Sandy Shantz, a former councillor, garnered an overwhelming majority of the votes, finishing with 4,431.

Doug Hergott came in second with 887 votes, and incumbent councillor Bonnie Bryant third with 851.

In the only other township mayoral race involving an incumbent, Wilmot Mayor Les Armstrong held off challenger Terry Broda to win a second term.

Armstrong picked up 3,382 votes, compared to 2,649 for Broda.

With 15 of 20 polls reporting in North Dumfries, Susan Foxton had a strong lead with 947 votes, ahead of former mayor Kim Denouden with 740 and challenger John Holman with 567.

In Wellesley, the race to replace retiring mayor Ross Kelterborn was a three-way battle between Paul Hergott, Joe Nowak and Jim Olender.

Shortly before midnight, with 13 of 15 polls reporting, Nowak had 55.8 per cent of the vote.

Olender had a narrow lead for second with 23.1 per cent, followed by Hergott with 21.1 per cent.
