The search for a two year old boy and his pet dog is over. Steven Martin went missing when a Woolwich barn burned to the ground Friday evening.

It's believed the pair was consumed by fire and officials say they've exhausted all resources looking for their remains and have come up empty.

Ontario Fire Marshal, Greg Olson says “We have absolutely no human remains that have been located.”

The toddler had been outside playing with his pet golden retriever when the barn burst into flames Friday evening.

His father and several neighbours rushed in to free the heard of dairy cows inside and it's believe little Steven and the dog may have run in after them trying to help.

“I'm absolutely 100 per cent that. this young lad if he was inside and that was the only place that wasn’t' searched, was consumed by the fire” says Olson.

Friends of the family were hoping something would have been discovered to give the family closure. Without it they say it will we difficult to accept.

Isaac Wolfe says “They're taking it quite hard… wherever the father was he was too  and I think that makes it harder for the dad to except what happened.”

Neighbour Irene Wolfe says she will remember Steven as a happy young boy who was always smiling.

“He’s a very happy little boy, lively chap… He was just smiling at me from ear to ear, those are the memories I have of Steven.”

Neighbours have been visiting the family non-stop the last few days to lend their support. Those who work and live nearby say they're keeping the family in their prayers.

John's Nursery Owner, John Albreacht says “It’s beyond any expressions. I feel sorry for them. to lose a child is unbelievable.”

Sharon Charbonneau says, “Our thoughts and sadness go out to the family.”

To get through this difficult time, members of the tight knit Mennonite community are relying on their faith for comfort.

“We need to look on the positive side… The mom didn't do anything wrong and nor did the dad but god’s timing is always right.” says Irene Wolfe.
