Waterloo Regional Police are investigating after a two vehicle crash in Cambridge that killed 17-year-old Haris Hanif.

It happened just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night on Maple Grove Road near Beaverdale Road. Hanif, who was on his way home from work, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Waterloo Regional Polices spokesperson Olaf Heinzel says "Right now police are still investigating this tragic incident in our community and investigators at the present time are looking at speed as a likely factor in the collision."

The Cambridge teen was reportedly driving his Honda Civic eastbound when he lost control while trying to pass. The vehicle then veered into the westbound lanes where it collided with a Dodge Neon.

The driver of the other car, a 37-year-old Cambridge man, and his passenger were both taken to Cambridge Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Residents nearby say he impact was so loud it was heard about a kilometre away.

Virgina Schmalz heard the crash, she says "It just sounded like something crashed, and it did shake the house a little bit."

Friends remember

Hanif was a Grade 12 student at Galt Collegiate Institute, and friends there are mourning his loss.

Friends like Christina Robinson are remembering Hanif, "He was always fun, always outgoing and always had something good to talk about. He never looked at the bad. He was always good, good, good."

She adds, "We just got to keep remembering the good and try not to cry, it's hard but we've got to try."

Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the Traffic Service Branch at 519-650-8500 Ext. 8856.
