A 21-year-old man cried in court after being charged with first degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Adam Tyler Jones more than a month ago.
Kadeem Anthony Gabriel was arrested on separate charges in Halifax, N.S. on Tuesday, and returned to Waterloo Region overnight.
Waterloo Regional Police Staff-Sgt. Chris Downey says “Kadeem Gabriel was actually wanted on a separate and unrelated charge relating to breach probation. We became aware he was in the Nova Scotia area.”
Appearing in court, he cried out that he was ‘sorry’ and as he was led from the courtroom he said “I don’t want to go, I don’t want to go.”
Two local attorneys have been retained for Gabriel’s defence. Lawyer Brennan Smart says his client has reason to be emotional.
“He’s charged with first degree murder so a detention order is automatic, you have to make an application for bail in Superior Court. We’re not entertaining that at this point, we need to see the disclosure.”
Twenty-five-year-old Jones was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Belmont Avenue West apartment building in Kitchener the evening of Sept. 6.
Ten days later, 20-year-old Jerome Phillips of Kitchener was arrested and charged with being an accessory after the fact. He remains in custody.
Recently, police indicated the shooting may have been related to a drug transaction and they had identified persons of interest in the case.
“I can tell you there is still outstanding persons of interest and we continue to gather information just to determine what if any involvement there may be from these people,” Downey says.
Gabriel and Jones are believed to have known each other and the accused is expected back in court next week.
