The Waterloo Catholic District School Board is planning to ask the region not to move forward with a new roundabout slated for Cambridge.

The roundabout is planned at Saginaw Parkway and Franklin Boulevard, where there is currently a stoplight.

The board passed the motion unanimously at a meeting on Monday night and will now send a letter to the region.

Board chair Manuel Da Silva says "Hopefully a lesson learned in a heavily populated area and if we can avoid the same scenario, lets prevent it from the get go, rather than making recommendations and adjustments to make it safe after the fact."

St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School sits at the intersection where the roundabout is planned and there are four other schools close by.

The board would prefer that the intersection remain signalized.

The move comes less than three weeks after a Kitchener teen was seriously injured when she was hit by a Grand River Transit bus at the Homer Watson Boulevard and Block Line Road roundabout.

Sixteen-year-old Cassi Lam continues to recover from her injuries.

The driver of the bus has been charged in connection with that collision, but the roundabout remains controversial.

Police enforcing speed limits for safety

Meanwhile, the Waterloo Region Police Service is cracking down on drivers speeding in the area of the Homer Watson and Block Line roundabout.

They say excessive speed is a major safety concern as vehicles approach or exit the busy roundabout.

Waterloo Regional Police Sgt. Scott Richardson says "The highest speed being 101 and someone doing 111 kilometres per hour coming out of the roundabout. We weren't able to go after them, but that's an indication the speeds are high in the area."

In less than two days of enforcement, officers say they have stopped more than a dozen drivers.

On Wednesday regional council will vote on a plan to reduce the speed limit on Homer Watson Boulevard near the roundabout to 50 kilometres per hour and change the signs from 'Yield to Pedestrians' to 'Stop for Pedestrians.'
