Extreme cold warning in effect for Saskatoon, wind chills to plummet to -40 C

A multi-day cold snap has prompted Environment and Climate Change Canada to issue an extreme cold warning for the city of Saskatoon.

Residents can expect wind chills to drop to the -40 C at times this weekend, with the cold snap expected to persist into early next week.

The weather agency warns that extreme cold puts everyone at risk, particularly vulnerable people such as young children, older adults, and those with chronic illnesses.

People working or exercising outdoors, as well as those without proper shelter, are also at increased risk.

Environment Canada asks people to stay indoors if possible and those outside, watch for cold-related illnesses symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, and numbness or color change in fingers and toes.

To prepare for the extreme cold, residents are reminded to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, such as extra blankets and jumper cables.
