Canada's largest used oil re-refinery broke ground Thursday on a $26-million expansion that will increase capacity by 25 per cent.
Ontario Environment Minister John Wilkinson was in Breslau, near Kitchener,to lend his support for the announcement, though no public money is involved.
"I think we've all hears about the three R's, reduce, reuse, recycle," he says. "Most people think this place is about recycling, but actually no. It's the step before, the one that is even more important, which is reuse."
The expansion will bring eight new jobs, and the amount of oil being re-refined will rise from 150 million litres to 190 million litres.
Dale MacIntyre is the vice-president of Safety-Kleen Systems. He breaks down what the company does.
"We take the used oil and re-refine it back into lubricants again. And we make a variety from passenger car engine oils to heavy duty diesel engine oils to transmission fluids. About 50 different types of lubricants."
Safety-Kleen is the largest used motor oil re-refinery in the country, creating new oil sold under the ‘Eco Power' brand.
Construction on the project is expected to take 18 months, with the expansion slated to open in the summer of 2012.
