Some quick-thinking neighbours rescued a man from an early morning house fire in Kitchener.

Fire officials say one of the neighbours living on Maywood Road was woken up by his dog around 5 a.m. Saturday and smelled smoke.

They say that’s when he saw the fire and rushed to wake another neighbour.

Platoon Chief Doug Voisin tells CTV News that the neighbours entered the burning house and dragged the quadriplegic man, who had been trapped and unable to call for help, outside to safety.

Voisin calls the neighbours “absolute heroes” for their actions.

Firefighters arrived moments later and put out the fire.

The man was taken to hospital where he was treated for smoke inhalation.  A firefighter was also treated in hospital for burns.

Officials are now trying to determine what caused the fire.

No word on damages.
