A Cambridge teacher who faked having cancer and pleaded guilty to fraud will not spend any time behind bars.

Breanne McGuire was teaching at Hespeler Public School when, in 2008, members of the school community were among those who allegedly raised $14,000 for her after being told she had cancer.

The money was to go toward McGuire’s expenses and treatment.

Court heard in 2012 that although McGuire did not actually have cancer, she believed she was suffering from a rare form of the disease known as neuroblastoma.

Tuesday, McGuire was given a conditional discharge and an 18-month probationary sentence.

Defence lawyer Bruce Ritter tells CTV News his client is relieved to have the situation behind her.

After being charged by police, McGuire donated $8,000 to the Canadian Cancer Society.
