Police say they’re looking for an arsonist after the front porch of a Madison Avenue home in Kitchener was deliberately set on fire, while a woman slept inside.

The incident happened around 6 a.m. Saturday morning.

The whole incident was caught on tape by a neighbour living nearby.  Police would not release the video, but they have viewed it and say it shows a man entering the porch and shortly after lighting a fire.

Meanwhile, Valerie Imeson was asleep on the couch inside and woke up to discover her porch was on fire.  “I happened to look straight ahead when I noticed it was all read outside.”

Imeson has viewed the video and says a man approached the porch, and then there was a flash.   “He actually stood there for 3 minutes across the street and watched it.”

When Imeson realized what was happening, she ran outside and flagged down a passing motorist.  He got out of his car and started shovelling snow onto the flames.  The fire was out before the fire department arrived at the scene.

Fire officials estimate the damage at 5-thousand dollars.

Police say at the time of the incident the man was wearing a light-coloured long sleeve shirt, dark jeans and white running shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
