A robbery at a variety store, a series of break-ins and multiple fires that hit a Waterloo neighbourhood Friday morning may or may not be related, say police.
The fires occurred on various streets in the vicinity of Northfield Drive and Davenport Road.
On Kingscourt Drive, a fire was started beside a parked car, setting off the car’s alarm around 5 a.m.
“My daughter ran in and woke me up,” said car owner David Love.
“I ran outside – sure enough, the interior of the car was pretty well engulfed in flames. I shut the door, ran back inside and phoned 911.”
Nearby Foxhunt Road also saw activity, with a homeowner awakening around 4 a.m. to find chairs on her front porch on fire.
Break-ins to automobiles parked on Foxhunt were also reported, but it’s not clear if they are related to the fires.
“We’re early into our investigation. We don’t know if they’re linked,” says Waterloo Regional Police Staff Sgt. John Goodman.
Also possibly connected to the spree is a break-in at a Short Stop variety store in the same neighbourhood.
Police say two men entered the store around 2 a.m., placed merchandise into a backpack and sprayed canned beverages on the floor.
