The Waterloo Regional Police Service raided a number of locations early Thursday morning arresting more than a dozen people and seizing a quantity of drugs.

Police say around 6:30 a.m. nine residences and one business in Kitchener and a residence in Brampton, Ont. were searched.

The raids were part of a joint investigation with the Guelph Police Service and the local forces were assisted by Peel Regional Police.

Waterloo Regional Police Insp. Greg Lamport says "We feel it was a significant amount of drug trafficking that was going on and it was a conspiracy to commit trafficking and that's what commenced the investigation."

The simultaneous searches occurred in areas of Kitchener including Doon, Strasburg and Chicopee.

One area resident tells CTV News her family was awoken by the commotion at a home across the street from her.

Holly Mount says "This morning I woke up to a really loud thump and we went to check it out. I thought my daughter had fallen out of bed and we looked out the front window and saw the canine unit going up the street and police had gone through the front door with a battering ram."

Police say 15 people were arrested on allegations including conspiracy to traffic in a controlled substance, trafficking in a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Additional arrests and charges are possible. A quantity of drugs and property were also seized.

Police say the investigation that led to the raids is focused on the distribution of cocaine in the region and surrounding areas.

Lamport says "Project Sandstorm is an investigation into drug trafficking. Illegal drugs from marijuana to cocaine, pretty well any street-level drug."

The operation has reportedly been in the works for about six months and the raids were a culmination of the investigation, he adds.

There were no injuries in the course of the raids and no resistance among those arrested.

Police are processing the evidence, sorting through the drugs and property seized, but say there's nothing to indicate any gang involvement.
