A man sought in connection with a triple shooting on Wellington Street Saturday morning has been identified.

Waterloo Region police say he was allegedly around the scene of the shooting when the incident occurred.

However, they won’t say how he may be involved, whether he’s considered a suspect, if they’ve spoken to him or release his name.

Waterloo Region Police Insp. Kevin Thaler says “At this point we do not have a name we can release.”

Police will only say that there is no concern for public safety.

A security camera photo taken from surveillance video at a nearby variety store had been released on Sunday to try to identify the man.

The incident occurred shortly before 5 a.m. on Saturday, when three men were shot at the corner of King and Wellington Streets.

All three were taken to hospital, and area residents say all appeared to have been shot in the legs.

One has since been released, while two others remain in hospital for further treatment.

Police say the shooting appears to have been a targeted attack and could be related to an incident on Duke Street at Wellington Street about 20 minutes before the shooting.

Thaler says “It does not appear to have been a random event. It does appear that the suspect and the victims were known to each other leading up to the incident.”

Forensic teams spent much of Saturday morning searching for evidence at the scene of the shooting, before moving on to the area of the alleged altercation.

On Sunday, police were canvassing the area of Wellington and Duke Streets, speaking with residents.

The area has a number of multi-unit dwellings, but those living in the area say this kind of activity isn’t typical, and there’s only the occasional party.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the altercation on Saturday morning to contact them.
