One person was found dead at the scene of an apartment fire in Kitchener on Thursday.

Firefighters were called to an apartment complex on Westwood Drive, near Westmount Road and Glasgow Street, shortly after 2 p.m.

Arriving at the scene, they discovered smoke in the hallway from a fire in a ground floor unit.

“As far as I’m aware, the fire was contained to the unit,” Insp. Craig Ambrose of Waterloo Regional Police said at the scene.

Neighbours believe a man lived alone inside the apartment where the fire occurred.

It was not clear if that man was the person found inside, or if that person’s death was connected to the fire.

People living inside three-storey the building were allowed to go back inside around 5:30 p.m.
