Driver's licences and health cards are being changed to ensure the fair and equal treatment of transgendered people and those do not identify as female or male.

The provincial government says that starting early next year, drivers will be able to select a gender-neutral X, instead of an M for male or F for female for their licences.

It also says it started issuing health cards this month that no longer display information about a person's sex on the front of the card.

People who want a new health card without the sex identifier before their regular renewal date can obtain one immediately through Service Ontario at no cost.
