TORONTO -- Ontario's electricity system operator has announced 16 new large renewable energy projects, including one on the site of the former Nanticoke coal-fired plant.

The Independent Electricity System Operator says the five wind, seven solar and four hydroelectric contracts represent more than 450 megawatts of renewable energy capacity.

Ontario Power Generation, Sun Edison Canadian Construction LP and Six Nations Development Corporation were selected to develop a 44-megawatt solar facility on and near the Nanticoke Generating Station site on Lake Erie.

The IESO says 13 of the 16 new projects include participation from aboriginal communities, but about one-third of the projects do not have support from abutting landowners.

The operator says the price ranges for the contracts are lower than the feed-in-tariff rates.

The projects will still have to obtain required environmental approvals and permits before they can start to be built.
