TORONTO -- Ontario's minority Liberal government has easily survived a series of confidence votes thanks to support from the New Democrats.
The Progressive Conservatives had urged the NDP to help them defeat the routine supply motions, which would also have defeated the government and plunged Ontario into an election campaign.
But NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says the Tories were playing dangerous Tea Party-type games that could send Ontario over a fiscal cliff.
She says it would have been irresponsible to vote against the supply motions that essentially allow the government to pay the bills.
Horwath says even Elections Ontario wouldn't have been able to spend money to run an election campaign if the supply motions were not approved.
She also says the NDP are still considering whether or not to support the Liberals on the next confidence vote on the provincial budget, expected in March or early April.
The Liberals had surprised the Opposition Monday by introducing the supply motions, which are always matters of confidence because they involve government spending.
The NDP point out no government has ever been defeated on supply motions.
