Additional sexual assault charges were laid against Sean Butler at a bail hearing in Kitchener on Thursday.

The 41-year-old Kitchener man was already charged with human trafficking, sexual assault and forcible confinement in connection with a female complainant.

However, Butler's lawyer has moved to have some of the charges dropped, and have his client released.

Defence lawyer Sean Safa says "The Justice of the Peace has no power to dismiss the charges at this stage. I invited the Crown to dismiss the charges…especially the human trafficking because based on the evidence that we heard at bail, there's no justification for them."

A publication ban prevents the evidence presented at the hearing from being reported.

On Wednesday, an 18-year-old man was arrested in connection with the case, but Waterloo Regional Police Sgt. Dave Reibel says he was released.

According to Reibel "Through investigation officers arrested a gentleman here at the courthouse yesterday, but though follow-up investigation that person has been unconditionally released and no charges laid."

The bail hearing was originally scheduled for three hours, but has now taken two days.

It will continue later in November, when any changes to charges and bail will be determined.
