A freezing rain warning is in effect for Waterloo Region as residents and plow operators prepare for more icy weather.

“I was kind of hoping the ground hogs would be right,” said resident Eric Blondeel. “A few said it was going to be an early spring.”

Rosyln Lusk, Road and Traffic Director of Operations for the City of Kitchener, says all routes are filled and 17 salt operators will be out on the roads after the sanders go by.

“It’s storm by storm, hour by hour,” she said. “We have to treat the precipitation as it’s coming down.”

The City of Waterloo says weather patterns are changing with the storms now including a mix of snow and rain.

The weather isn’t expected to be as heavy or prolonged as last week, when the region was hit with ice pellets, freezing rain, and strong winds.

Police were called to several crashes on slippery roads, school busses were cancelled, schools were closed, and even some business shut their doors.

Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and North Dumfries all declared snow events.

“It’s going to get better,” said resident Roland Hofer. “We just have to get through February.”

The City of Waterloo has yet to ban overnight street parking.
