A man has been killed and a woman airlifted to hospital after a motorcycle and an SUV collided at Wellington Road 7 and Wellington Road 11 early Monday.

Shortly after 5:30 a.m., OPP, the Mapleton Fire Department and Guelph-Wellington EMS responded to the collision reported northeast of Drayton.

OPP say a Honda motorcycle was travelling northeast on Wellington Road 11 when it failed to obey a stop sign and struck the Honda CRV which was travelling northwest.

Wellington OPP Const. Keith Robb says "Sadly the motorcyclist hit the car without even applying the brakes, it would appear, and hit the car right in the driver's door. So the driver of the CRV sustained very serious injuries as a result of that."

The driver of the motorcycle, John Gordon Tennant, 30, of London, Ont. was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, 54-year-old Kathryn Simpkins of Guelph, Ont. was airlifted to a London hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Local residents say accidents at the intersection are not unusual, with vehicles often travelling through the area at high speeds.

Jody House lives at the intersection and says "This is of course the worst thing that we've seen unfortunately…This is at least the third, maybe fourth in the three years we've been here that there's been a bad accident."

It is the first fatality at the intersection, and House says residents would like to see something done, "Something more like rumble sticks or more of a caution sign so people know to slow down."

But some measures are in place, Robb says "We've had crashes here before and that's probably the reason why you see the flashing red light right now at the intersection and the oversized stop sign."

Both roads were closed for several hours as police investigated and the coroner was also called to the scene.

Police still don't know if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
