A large police presence descended on a busy commercial area in Guelph’s south end Thursday afternoon.

A suspicious package investigation brought about 15 police officers to a plaza near Stone Road and Scottsdale Drive shortly before noon.

The package in question was a backpack which had been spotted outside the plaza. An out-of-town bomb disposal team was brought in to examine the backpack.

Witnesses told CTV News that people in nearby buildings were being asked to stay put while police investigated, and the Guelph Public Library said its branch on Scottsdale was closed due to the investigation.

Around 2 p.m., police said the backpack contained only personal belongings, their investigation had ended and the area would be reopened.

It was not immediately clear why the backpack was left in the area.
