The man accused of killing a 17-year-old girl in a double shooting in Milverton made a brief court appearance, via video link, on Friday morning.

Michael Schweitzer, 23, is charged with the first degree murder of Nicole Wagler and the attempted murder of 22-year-old Tyler Baker.

On Tuesday night police were called to a home on Edward Street. Inside they found the Wagler and Baker, both with gunshot wounds. Wagler had died from her injuries. Baker was rushed to a London hospital in critical condition.

Police arrested Schweitzer at the scene of the shooting.

“I know Tyler and Mike were really good friends,” said Nicole Allin. “I don’t believe any of them were more than just friends.”

According to neighbours, Schweitzer and Baker were roommates. The house they shared was also known as a place where young adults would get together to party.

For many people in the small village, the shooting has hit too close to home.

“For all involved, it’s a terrible tragedy,” said Denise Schiavone. “Our prayers and support are with each and every one of the kids and the parents’ families.”

A community prayer service will be held at the Milverton Mennonite Fellowship church on Friday night at 7 p.m.
