ROCKFORD, Ont. - Provincial police are revealing more details of an incident that ended with a man in hospital and his alleged assailant dead following a shootout with police south of Owen Sound.

They say a 44-year-old man was shot at when he tried to intervene in an altercation between a man and a woman on Monday evening at Grew Boat Manufacturing in Rockford, Ont.

Police say the woman managed to escape and a Georgian Bluffs Township man is recovering from a gunshot wound in a London, Ont., hospital.

Officers pursued the suspected gunman to Kemble, north of Owen Sound, where he exchanged fire with police after he got out of his pickup truck that had been stopped by a spike belt.

The suspect ran into a wooded area, where he was found dead a short time later. No officers were injured.

The province's Special Investigations Unit is probing the death of the suspect.
