A 30-year-old man faces two charges of attempted murder in connection with a police shooting at a townhouse in Cambridge.

Wesley Laforme appeared at the Kitchener courthouse via audio-link Thursday afternoon, in connection with the late-April incident on Morning Calm Drive.

According to court documents, Laforme is accused of breaking into a woman’s townhouse and threatening to kill her.

The same documents allege that Laforme attempted to kill the woman by stabbing her repeatedly with a knife, and tried to kill a female police constable by stabbing her as well.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit – which looks into cases in which somebody dies or is seriously injured while interacting with police – has said that the police officer fired her weapon at the man after she was stabbed.

All three people involved were taken to hospital, with the police officer being released from care in short order.

The other two were both in need of surgery, and spent weeks in hospital – in Laforme’s case, remaining in care as of Thursday.

In addition to attempted murder, Laforme faces seven other charges including uttering death threats.

The woman who lived at the townhouse never returned to the building, neighbours say, and had her belongings removed.
