CHATHAM, Ont. - A man accused in the death of an 81-year-old man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Chatham, Ont.

David Gillanders was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison.

Gillanders had been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Romeo Marentette, who was killed in his Grand Avenue apartment in March 2009.

Court heard Gillanders admitted to police in April 2009 that he had punched Marentette, causing him to fall to the floor of his apartment and die.

Gillanders then tried to make the death look like it happened from natural causes, before making off with Marentette's wallet, rings and cheques.

Before sentencing, Gillanders apologized to the family, saying he regrets what happened. He also apologized to the court for wasting its time.
