Police have identified the man found dead at the scene of an apartment fire in Kitchener as 23-year-old Gavin Richard Daley.

Daley’s body was found by firefighters last Thursday, after they responded to a fire inside a unit at 123 Westwood Drive.

Waterloo Regional Police say they believe Daley’s death was a targeted homicide, as signs of trauma were found on his body.

Detectives spent the weekend going door-to-door in the Westwood area, asking people living near the apartment if they had any information that could assist their investigation.

Monday, police cruisers remained parked outside the three-storey building.

Adrian Metcalf, who lives in the apartment above Daley’s, says the 23-year-old hadn’t been living in the complex for very long.

“I’m not sure if I’ve seen his face at all,” he told CTV News.

“It’s such an ugly crime. So close to Christmas, it’s horrible.”

Other neighbours say they’re hoping police make quick progress with their investigation.

“For everybody involved, it’s a little unsettling,” said Cameron Drever.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
