A Hamilton man died in hospital after a minivan crashed into a trench on Fischer-Hallman Road around 9:20 a.m. Monday.

Waterloo Regional Police say two people were working in the hole as part of a construction project on Fischer-Hallman near Seabrook Drive, in Kitchener’s southwest end.

“The driver lost control of his vehicle and the vehicle ended up in a ditch,” Sgt. Frank Heinrich tells CTV News.

“Inside the ditch was a construction area, and two construction workers were inside the ditch.”

One of the two workers was able to escape the hole with only minor injuries, but the other was taken to hospital and later pronounced dead.

Hamilton Police have now notified the next of kin, and have identified the victim of the crash as 56-year-old Edward Rizzo.

The driver was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Fischer-Hallman Road was closed until around 3:30 p.m.

The Ministry of Labour is investigating the incident along with police.
