Waterloo Region police have charged 48-year-old Jorge Moniz of Cambridge with first degree murder in the death of Paula Mare.

Mare, 38, has been identified as the Cambridge woman found stabbed to death at the Comfort Inn Hotel where she was an employee.

Police responded to the scene at 220 Holiday Inn Drive on Saturday afternoon, where they found both Moniz and Mare suffering from stab wounds in a second floor room.

Mare was pronounced dead at the scene and Waterloo Regional Police Insp. Greg Lamport says "The results of the post mortem found that she died as a result of stab wounds."

She had reportedly been working when the stabbing occurred. Police say Moniz was Mare's long-time common-law partner.

Moniz remains in hospital under police guard. He was initially taken to Cambridge Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Hamilton General Hospital.

He was charged when he regained consciousness on Monday afternoon. Police say they are not looking for any other suspects at this time.

No one at the hotel is commenting and one guest tells CTV News the staff appears quite shaken up and grief counsellors have been brought in.
