Waterloo Regional police have charged a 28-year-old man with first degree murder in connection with the death of a Kitchener woman in her 20s.

Emergency services responded to an eighth floor apartment at 10 Overlea Drive around 2 a.m. on Friday and discovered woman without vital signs.

Waterloo Regional Police Insp. Greg Lamport says "Along with police, emergency services personnel also came in to the location and found the female deceased."

The Coroner was called in and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary results of a post mortem examination found the woman died from blunt force trauma.

No names have been released pending notification of next of kin, who reportedly live outside the region.

The man has also been charged with failing to comply with a judge's orders. No other arrests are expected in the case.

Police remain on scene and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

The apartment has been secured and is under guard, while the grounds and dumpsters around the building are also being searched for evidence.

Local residents say they didn't know what was going on. Matt Dicks lives on the 11th floor, he says "This just came as a complete surprise, I haven't heard anything. I just came down to walk my dog and just seen a bunch of cop cars out here."
