The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) has arrested a man for attempted murder after a shooting in Kitchener left another man with serious injuries.

Police say the shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the area of Wellington and King Streets. Walter Street from Agnes Street to Wellington was closed off in both directions.

A 23-year-old man from Stoney Creek has been charged with attempted murder, robbery with a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition, and for being an occupant of a vehicle knowing there was a firearm.

A 23-year-old man from Kitchener has been taken to an out-of-region hospital with serious injuries. As of Saturday night, he remains in serious condition, according to police.

"Not something that you'd expect right outside your front door," said Colin Prentice, who lives neaby. "My girlfriend was over at the time, I just turned to her, and I think she said, 'whoa were those gunshots?' I said, "I don't know. I hope not." But then we heard sirens shortly after."

WRPS say the two men are known to each other. They believe the shooting was targeted.

"At this time we have a 23-year-old male from Stoney Creek under arrest for attempted murder, robbery with a firearm, and other weapons related offences," said Staff Supt. John Goodman with WRPS. "We would sure like folks, if they have any witness cameras or any other information for us, to notify Crime Stoppers or call into our investigators."

At the scene Saturday morning, several police officers and a forensics unit could be seen continuing to secure the area and investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to contact WRPS (519-570-9777) or Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-8477).
