The Kitchener man accused with attempted murder following a shooting in a Cambridge carpool lot made his first court appearance Monday afternoon.

Wearing a black hoodie, Hasnain Ali Manji sat quietly as he listened to lawyers discuss the allegations against him.

Manji is facing two charges of attempted murder, as well as a pair of weapon-related offences.

He is accused of being the man who fired multiple shots at a silver car in the parking lot near Fountain Street and Highway 401 early Saturday morning.

As a result of the shooting, a 25-year-old Brampton man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

As of Monday, he had been through surgery and his condition had been upgraded to stable.

Police say Manji and the 25-year-old knew each other prior to the shooting.

“The information we have right now is that they were acquaintances,” said Staff Sgt. Mike Haffner of Waterloo Regional Police.

The second person in the 25-year-old’s car, a woman, was not hurt.

At the scene Saturday morning, it appeared that all of the shots were fired through the car’s windshield, and only on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Following his court appearance, Manji was returned to custody. He returns to court on Thursday.

Three people who identified themselves as friends of Manji were in the gallery for his court date. One of them told CTV News that the allegations are out of character for the 33-year-old.

Meanwhile, police continue their search for a black 1997 Mercedes E320 car with the licence plate BSPL580.

They say the sedan belongs to Manji, may have damage to its front passenger side, and has not been spotted since the shooting.
