Waterloo regional police say a male has been taken into custody after officers responded to reports of someone barricaded inside a Kitchener home.

In a tweet posted at 5:12 p.m., police said officers were on-scene in the area of Cedar Street South and Charles Street East.

At 5:58 p.m., police said a male had been taken into custody and no injuries were reported.

Police said upon arrival they located a 53-year-old man who had sustained an injury after being struck by a metal pole.

"As police negotiated with the male, they learned that a female was inside the residence who the male allegedly prevented from leaving. Throughout the negotiation, the male uttered threats," police said in an update. "Members of the Waterloo Regional Police Service's Emergency Response Team were able to breach the door to the unit and arrest the male"

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
