Residents of Woodstock's east end were evacuated from their homes Monday morning as firefighters investigated a gas leak.

Crews from each of the city’s fire stations were called to the area of Lansdowne Avenue and Cardinal Drive shortly after 10 a.m.

Woodstock Fire officials tell CTV News a machine operator working on behalf of a private company hit a gas line in the area with a fence auger.

Lansdowne was closed between Devonshire Avenue and Mohawk Street for the investigation, while residents in a one-block radius were evacuated as a precaution.

The scene was cleared up and residents allowed to return home shortly before noon.
