‘Extreme cold’ weather warnings, poor road conditions in London and region

We could be in record-breaking territory with cold temperatures overnight. Julie Atchison has the updated forecast.

Extreme cold warnings are in effect across southern Ontario stretching into Huron-Perth, Grey and Bruce counties.

“It’ll feel like minus 30 C as we head into the evening,” said CTV News London Meteorologist Julie Atchison. “Temperatures outside right now of feeling like minus 21 C to a minus 23 C.”

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) has issued a cold weather alert extension into Wednesday afternoon, with temperatures expected to plunge to -32 C with windchill overnight.

A cold weather alert is issued by MLHU anytime a temperature is forecasted to reach -15 C or lower, a windchill or -20 C or lower, or Environment Canada issues a cold alert or cold warning for the region.

According to Atchison, the last time it was this cold in London was January 2022 — the coldest night was Jan. 29 at -25.5 C.

“We have some flurries in the forecast as we head into the afternoon early evening [Tuesday] and then partly cloudy conditions expected mainly clear as we push toward midnight and we’re down to about -20, feeling like -30 C with the winds out of the southwest.”

Looking ahead to Wednesday, Atchison said there will be lots of sunshine on the way through the early part of the day, but starting at -22 C.

There is the potential for a record a breaking night — 1976 was the last time it was -23.3 C.
