Two firefighters from Brantford and Stratford, who died from occupational cancer, were honoured in Ottawa on Sunday.

Lt. John Mavity and Capt. David Cartmel were among nine fallen firefighter who had their names added to the Canadian Firefighters Annual Memorial honour roll.

At the ceremony, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said, “let us never forget that the safety that we all enjoy in our daily lives, comes at a price, a price that the loved ones of those lost know too well.”

“Everybody loved him, they just loved him,” said Laurie Brown, Mavity’s widow.

Before losing a battle with occupational related cancer in January 2013, Lt. Mavity had been a member of Stratford’s fire department for 27 years.

“On behalf of every Canadian, I extend our deepest condolences to the friends, families, comrades of those who have lost their lives,” said Baird.

“Being a firefighter and working in very hostile environments is something that a lot of people don’t appreciate or take for granted, and this is us as firefighters across Canada taking a short period of time to honour and respect them,” said John De Hooge, Ottawa fire Chief.
