Kittens found in trash bag taken to humane society, Kitchener residents arrested: WRPS
Police have arrested two people from Kitchener after live kittens were found in a trash bag.
Waterloo regional police and provincial animal welfare services began their animal cruelty investigation on Mar. 28 when they say a community member made a discovery while out for a walk in the city's Southdale neighbourhood.
Four live kittens were found tied up in a garbage bag, according to officials, with another right beside the bag injured.
"Four kittens were clearly from the same litter and all of them were the same age," said Calla James of the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo & Stratford Perth. "The other one is currently being fostered by one of our medical team members. It does appear that the cat has sustained an injury to the hind end of some kind, we don't know what would have caused it."
Police say the person who found them brought the kittens home and cared for them before the humane society responded.
On Saturday, police arrested a 37-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man from Kitchener in connection to the animal cruelty investigation.
The two were charged with causing distress and permitting distress to an animal.
The kittens are all between seven to nine weeks old, are healthy, are in foster care, and will eventually be available for adoption.
"They're just going through that time until they get a little bit bigger when we can spay and neuter them and then go forward with adoptions," said James.
Last week, the humane society found several abandoned bunnies on their property.
"Do not abandon an animal, we are here for a reason," said James. "If you need help, we want you to contact us, we can talk to you about surrender services or any support services or if there are any support services we have for you to help keep pets in the home."
