The City of Kitchener is the latest local municipality to say it wants no part of a casino.

Kitchener councillors voted unanimously against pursuing a casino Monday night, leaving Woolwich Township as the sole municipality in Waterloo Region still interested in a facility.

But councillors didn’t stop there, also passing a motion asking Woolwich to reconsider its decision.

Citing issues with addictions and problem gamblers, Coun. Frank Etherington said he doesn’t just want to see a casino stay out of Kitchener, but doesn’t want one in any neighbouring area.

“How can we justify government-sponsored actions that create that kind of human misery? How can you put a dollar value on those broken families?” he said.

A citizen survey saw 75 per cent of respondents opposed to the idea of locating a casino in Kitchener.

“I think the comments that you heard from council really is reflective of what we heard from the many delegations that appeared, as well as what we saw in the survey results,” said Coun. Berry Vrbanovic.

Also included in the motion was a request for the province to review the rules governing casino expansion plans and allowing upper-tier municipalities like the Region of Waterloo to have a say.

Last week, regional councillors voted in favour of a motion expressing disapproval of a casino, but the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. says it only needs permission from a lower-tier municipality like Woolwich in order to build a casino.

Premier Kathleen Wynne has said a review of the rules is warranted and the OLG says it is currently figuring out the specifics of how a review will work.
