As of Dec. 1, Kitchener’s Civic Square will have a new name.

The square will be renamed Zehr Square in honour of Carl Zehr, the city’s departing and longest-serving mayor.

“We feel this is a fitting tribute to Mayor Zehr given his support and involvement in the revitalization of the downtown,” Jeff Willmer, the city’s chief administrative officer, said in a press release.

Civic Square is the public square in front of Kitchener City Hall.

It features an ice rink during the winter months and fountain during the rest of the year, as well as tables and chairs, and plays host to numerous events and festivals.

Zehr has been Kitchener’s mayor since 1997.
