It’s official – the massive picnic held last summer in downtown Kitchener is officially the longest picnic the world has ever seen.
Guinness World Records has confirmed that the picnic, which spanned nearly 2.3 kilometres in the downtown core, is the largest such gathering on record.
“We needed the community to pull together to break a world record and Kitchener stepped up to the plate,” said Coun. Kelly Galloway-Sealock in a news release.
“What an amazing feat for our city, and a true testament to the remarkable community spirit that we have.”
Nearly 5,000 people were in attendance at the July 2012 picnic, which broke the record of 1,979 metres held by a 2009 picnic in Halle, Germany.
The official certificate from Guinness World Records will be displayed to the public on June 10 as part of the final event celebrating the city’s centennial year.
At the same time, a centennial time capsule will be placed at Kitchener City Hall.
