Sandeep Kaur and her daughter-in-law were sitting in their living room Wednesday afternoon when they were shocked by a loud noise.

“It was a big blast, a huge blast,” Kaur says.

“It was so loud. It was scary. I don’t want to hear that again.”

Looking up, Kaur saw two holes in the ceiling.

Lightning had struck their roof.

She called 911, and fire trucks arrived moments later at their home, in the Doon South neighbourhood of Kitchener.

Kaur and her daughter-in-law were OK, but the jolt left behind some serious damage to the roof – a strip up to 10 feet long was torn off the roof, and some shingles were found two yards over.

It also caused part of the building’s ceiling to shift.

“They’ve told us that they might have to redo the ceiling … the full living room ceiling,” Maninder Samra, Kaur’s son, says.

While there also seems to be some electrical damage in the home, Samra and Kaur say they’re just glad nobody was hurt and the damage wasn’t any more serious.
