The mother of a Guelph Police officer killed earlier this year says she believes she has a right to see the report on the crash that killed her daughter.

Const. Jennifer Kovach died in March when her cruiser crashed into a Guelph Transit bus on Imperial Road.

An internal investigation into the crash concluded that excessive speed on Kovach’s part and icy road conditions were the main factors that led to the collision.

Her mother, Gloria Kovach, says she’s not looking to dispute the report, but wants to see it with her own eyes – and doesn’t find it fair that she’s been told the only way she can do so is by filing a Freedom of Information request.

Kovach declined a formal interview with CTV News, but did say she feels she’s paid a high enough price for the crash already – and she says she’s been told the FOI request could cost as much as $2,500.

According to newspaper reports, Guelph Police Chief Bryan Larkin has said police are not legally able to hand out police reports and information under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
