The sentencing phase began for James Jefferson Tuesday. He was convicted of discharging a firearm with intent to wound in March.

Jefferson had originally been charged with attempted murder in the case.

In February 2009, Jefferson fired a .45 caliber handgun through the window of a moving SUV in which Nick Watson was a passenger. Watson was hit in the arm.

Watson and Jefferson had reportedly been friends, but bad blood had developed over a drug case.

Jefferson claimed it was self defence, and that he was not shooting to kill.

Crown Prosecutor Mark Poland says "The sentence that the Crown is asking for is eight to ten years, and from that the judge will subtract some period of time to account for the fact that Mr. Jefferson has been in jail awaiting his sentence."

Meanwhile the defence seeking a sentence in the range of six to seven years, less 51 months credit for time served. Jefferson has spent over two years in custody.

A judge is expected to decide on the sentence on April 14.
