Waterloo Regional police say the remains of a human body have been found just steps from a popular trail in Kitchener’s Idlewood Park.

“The preliminary autopsy has been done and that is how we were able to confirm that the remains are human remains,” says police superintendent Barry Zehr.

Police say they cannot yet confirm the gender of the remains, or how long they have been in the park.

Many nearby residents told CTV News they were surprised by what had happened, but would not let the incident deter them from returning to the park.

“These are usually freak incidents,” says Shawna Gigacz. “They’re probably not going to happen again.”

Police also say there is no reason for the community to worry. They are now awaiting autopsy results before providing more information on the case.
